Middlesex throttled by local rivals

The team lost to Surrey in ‘another spectacular batting collapse’, writes Mark Caswell

Once again a woeful batting performance from Middlesex led them to a nine wicket defeat to top of the table local rivals, Surrey.

Having been put into bat, Middlesex got off to a good start and at 166 – 1 were looking to post a first innings score of over 220 for the first time this season. However, another spectacular batting collapse saw the last 8 wickets add 43 runs.

Apart from Sam Robson 76 and Pieter Malan 66 who both looked confident against the useful Surrey bowling attack, eight of their batsman failed to get into double figures – a paltry 2 batting points from 5 games is not good enough.

With the second XI playing hardly any cricket due to poor outfields, the introduction of new batting talent might have to wait with Robbie White waiting patiently for a chance.

Surrey applied themselves well on a good cricket wicket and overcast conditions a total of  380 looked over par. Ethan Bamber deserved better figures 3-87, and Ryan Higgins also 3–87, took the bowling honours.

Middlesex second innings total 240 all out Max Holden 43 and Higgins 42, left the home team to score 72 for victory.

Surrey 380 ao & 73 – 1 v Middx 209 ao & 240 ao – Surrey win by 9 wickets
